Crown Casino Gets License Renewal
The sixth review of Crown Casino’s license concluded with good news for the gambling operator. The casino and resort group’s license was renewed by The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR). While the VCGLR found the casino to be guilty of “failures of governance and risk management, contributing to compliance slippages” it still renewed Crown’s license. The VCGLR released a 209-page report on its decision, along with 20 recommendations and instructions that must be adhered by if Crown wants to maintain its license. As one would imagine, this news has angered the Alliance for Gambling Reform.

Despite a number of casinos in Australia, it’s always Crown Casino that never seems to miss a news headline. From the health of its former chairman, James Packer to company executives sentenced for gambling crimes in China; to tampering with pokie machines down under; Crown Casino is always in the headlines. For these reasons, its difficult to digest the decision to renew their license, giving all the controversies surrounding the casino operator.
Reactions to the license renewal
Representing the Alliance for Gambling Reform, Tim Costello shared their views on the news. He said the casino “was criticised for its performance in a number of areas such as governance, regulatory compliance and responsible gambling, but the sanction from the VCGLR was overly focused on reviews, rather than specific actions or changes to licensing conditions.”
While Crown Melbourne’s chairman, John Alexander, said: “Crown recognises the importance of responsible gaming measures to the future of the industry and is committed to further engagement with relevant stakeholders and development and refinement of its responsible gaming program informed, as far as possible, by research and expert opinion.”
